PatternsOnLine and PayPal? |
Lead | ||
|
I just ordered Needle Guardian and, out of laziness, used my Paypal account rather than going to get my debit/credit card. Apparently Paypal isn't an
instant transaction as I assume Visa would have been. I'm disappointed because I thought I'd be able to hit print and then hit Needle in a Haystack
today. Does anyone know how long it takes to process a Paypal payment through Patternsonline? (I know that on ebay it depends on how the seller is set up.
Processing can take either 5 minutes or 5 days.) If it matters, my Paypal account is tied to my bank account directly. Thanks for any info. I'll sit back
and pretend to be patient now while wondering whether I want to just pay again using credit card and get my immediate-gratification fix. Patternsonline and
Visa are instantly processed, yes?

I think I used paypal for my purchase. It wasn't instant, but it was handled fairly quickly. You might want to keep checking your e-mail or your available
patterns.

Do you also have your credit card tied to your paypal account? I usually have that set up with paypal - they take the money from my bank account but the
transaction goes through almost instantly because they have my credit card details as a backup to charge me if the bank deposit is rejected. A few weeks back I
payed for an ebay auction with paypal and it took 8 days to go through. I didn't realise my credit card had expired, so paypal had to wait until the bank
deposit cleared. Frustrating, I know, because I want my stash now! But it went through eventually.

Next time I'll know to do it differently.
For now... Paypal and Patternsonline agree that the money should go through by Thursday the 27th and I should have Needle Guardian by Friday the 28th. Paypal says they can't cancel the order because the merchant has to do it and patternsonline says they can't cancel the order once it goes to Paypal. Meanwhile, I remembered that Needle in a Haystack is closed on Monday. I guess I'll spend Spring Break catching up on my reading because my Needle Guardian will show up in time for me to be back to the text books. *sigh* (Yeah, as if I don't have a dozen WIPs and a hundred charts I could kit and start. ;) )

My paypal is tied to my bank account as well so it's treated as an e-cheque and so it's takes as long as a normal cheque would

Is it instant if I use my credit card? I'm really tempted to bite the bullet, pay again and be able to work on this before I go back to school.

I haven't used PatternsOnline before, but generally paying by credit card is instant. I know with HAED it certainly is.
If you really want to start (and I know how that feels!) I'd be happy to buy your other copy of Needle Guardian off you for the price you paid for it. I'm supposed to be on the wagon, which is why I haven't bought it... but it wouldn't be stashing. It'd be helping out. Right? :P

I use mostly my credit card when buying something from Patternsonline - but I'm absolutely sure I did use also Paypal AND it went through immediately. I
remember that I thought that I might need to wait until I can download a pattern, but got the pattern right after I did the PP payment.
My Paypal is tied to my bank account with my Creditcard as background and all payments go through instantly. I know that because I buy quite a bit on Ebay, and often get a message from the seller about received payment with thanks and such. I'm a bit surprised that this isn't the case for everybody. I guess the security of the added Creditcard makes the difference? |

Yeah, apparently the Credit card part is some kind of added security for the merchant. The frustrating part of this for me is that in my case, it's all the
same. I have a debit/credit card that is attached to the same account that Paypal is. It's all about the method used to get to the same pile of money.
*sigh*
Kate, you're a good person to offer to help like that. But I wouldn't want to be responsible for any distractions from your stash only stitching. Tell you what - I do the deed and the extra chart will be my gift to you. No guilt for either of us that way (and seriously, we're not talking about enough money to truly matter). A bit later... ok, I did it, I used my credit card for immediate gratification and now, $11 later, I have a picture of the finished piece on PCStitch. Grrr. I don't know what I'm doing wrong. I'm using the free software on a Macintosh. Ideas anyone? OK, I found the answer - just hit print. But I really dislike that I have to print the whole thing without knowing that I'm printing. I would like to be able to resize the pattern and put the symbols on the same page. I didn't need instructions for the nun's stitch. I can't say that I'm enjoying the patternsonline experience overall. Now I'm off to drown my annoyances in overdyed flosses. Kate, do I have to print this to send it to you or can I send the electronic PVF file via email? I'm asking because there was some "configured for your computer" message thing. Also, and I think this'll be the last question... if anyone is reading who has done this piece, where's the X (color #792) on the chart? I'm playing with colors but don't see the X symbol except on the key.

Meliny, consider yourself lucky that you can print the pattern. I coughed up good money for three of TW's patterns
and can't get them to print. At all.
I suppose I'm lucky that
autumn sampler has now come out on paper as well so I can pay again for a pattern I already have and can finally actually stitch it too.

I'm not sure I can be any help here. But did you check your printer settings in Pattern Viewer? And also made sure that it says at the right down corner:
For use by "your name" ?
As far as I remember correctly, you need to give into Patternviewer your name when you install it or did I have to give in my name first time I downloaded a pattern from PatternOnline? Not sure when...but it remembers now my name. But if it wouldn't out of whatever reason, I would need to give in my name or it won't work. When you download a pattern and open the pattern first time there comes a window up where you have to accept something. I'm pretty sure it is the confirmation that it is you and that you agree that it's only for you an noone else. Something like that There has to be your name there or you have to give that in. Patternviewer says the pattern is not usable for anyone else but you. Once your name is in there, it won't open to anyone else's name. (At least that is what it says) While I never had that problem I think that something might have gone wrong here. Or with accepting or with the name thingy. If you can't get it to work, then I would contact PatternsOnline - they are pretty helpfull. Good Luck Gabi |

Glad to hear you got your new start Meliny.
For those that want to see your pattern before you print it, most Windows computers should have 'Microsoft Document Image Writer' listed in the drop down box where you select which printer you want to use in the 'print' window. This image writer thing will ask you what folder to "print" your file into, and will then save is as a TIFF image file into that location. The TIFF file can then be opened in most image editing programs (Paint, Paintshop, Photoshop) or by Windows Picture Viewer (which every Windows computer should have). The image writer only prints one page at a time, so if the chart is over two pages you'll have to ask it to print Page 1 of 2, save the file and then start again to print Page 2 of 2. A bit convoluted, but it lets you see what you're printing first.

Gabi, I never entered my name anywhere. I don't know if the Mac version is different than the Windows version though. But the problem had nothing to do
with my printer. I found in the Patternsonline FAQ that all I'm supposed to see is the picture of the completed project until I print it. When it prints,
the graph comes out. As for the Patternsonline people being helpful, I did not find them so when I inquired about changing my order from Paypal to Visa. The
response I got was neither helpful nor sympathetic but more along the lines of "it's not our problem."
Anyway, I started the border tonight so all's well that ends well. |

Sorry Meliny, I was referring to Galhenat who said she can't print her pattern. I should have been a bit clearer in my answer.
As for transferring a pattern from PatternOnline, I think you might have to do so before you opened it on your pc. Copied and pasted : "Patterns purchased from the PatternsOnline.com web site are licensed to a single user. When you open a licensed pattern for the first time, you will be prompted to verify that you are indeed the purchaser of that pattern. Once you confirm this, you will be unable to open patterns which have been licensed to any other person." I never passed a pattern on, nor did I try to open one that I didn't purchase...so no clue if it won't open or simply won't print. |

Ah, I understand Gabi. Thanks for clarifying. I hope Galhenat gets it to work.
I'll try to send Kate the unopened file and if that doesn't work, I'll print it and send it to her. I got to thinking about the "agreement" with Patternsonline. That thing you clip and pasted above is the message I get AFTER they take my money and send me the pattern. I get it when I try to open the pattern. I have to wonder how legal that is as an agreement at that point. *shrug* I'll wait until my second payment goes through before I do anything else and then let my conscience be my guide. I see nothing wrong with spreading the Teresa love as long as Teresa gets her cut. |

yes, I think you are pretty right correct with that. I wasn't thinking in "legal" terms, but more for the convenience of having a working
electronic file. Personally I prefer electronic files above paper charts.
Anyway, wishing you lots of fun with your chart |

If you don't like having to send the whole file to the printer, you can install a print-to-file driver (I use cutePDF writer, which is free http://www.cutepdf.com/Products/CutePDF/writer.asp). Then instead of sending the file to your
printer you click print, and select cutePDF writer as your printer, and it produces a PDF for you.
Since the PatternsOnline license is non-transferrable I wouldn't condone using it to transfer patterns between people, but was great when I didn't want to print all 12 days of Christmas just yet ;-) Hope this helps, Nicola |

Thanks Nicola. That doesn't appear to be Mac-friendly but I'm sure there are others who can use it.

I'm a little late, but for anyone else having issues seeing what's inside the PVF files before they print, I
second Nicola's suggestion of the CutePDF writer for Windows. In order to do the same thing on a Mac, you don't have to install anything because
it's already built in.
From any program, once you hit "Print" there is a dialog box that comes up for printing options. In the bottom left-hand corner there is a PDF button. Click on this and choose "Save as PDF" and you should then be given the option of choosing where you want to save the file. |
