YUCK! I think I chipped a tooth (UD2) |
Lead | ||
|
Okay, so Saturday night I bit down on something hardish and found what I thought a the time was a stray piece of bone in the hamburger I was eating. Gross, I
know, but as I didn't feel anything crack, and nothing HURT, I didn't seriously consider the possibility that it was a chipped piece of tooth. Plus,
all we were having that night were hamburgers, baby carrots, and rice so WHAT could it have chipped on? Over the next couple of days, I don't know if
it's psychosomatic or what but I've been sensitive to hot and cold on that side and my lower molar feels like it COULD have a sharpish jagged spot (or
maybe that's just ow my tooth is made??) Again, nothing HURTS, I'm just being extremely careful because my oral health is NOT something I play with.
I'd rather spend a little $$ now and have a professional tell me I'm being a dork that go on my merry way had end up spending a LOT of $$$ and losing
the tooth altogether. So now I get to call my insurance company and find the name of a dentist here in NY, hope s/he can fit me in, hope it's not TOO
expensive (this puts off a big purchase I was hoping to make with my tax rebate check) *SIGH* If anyone can give me some advice about what a chipped tooth
feels like (ie does it hurt like the dickens? If I'd chipped it would I know without a doubt? or yes, it doesn't necessarily hurt all the time go have
it looked at) I'd really appreciate it.

I have had a couple of experiences with this in the last couple of years.
Two Thanksgivings ago, my grandmother died, and while eating a Milk Dud (chocolate always helps during a death), I had half of a molar chip off. No pain, but lots on anxiety about it - not to mention trying to figure out why a Milk Dud was crunchy. I went to the dentist and they put in a major filling that eventually was changed to a crown. Lots of money, but worth every dime. The dentist believes the tooth chipped because of stress at the time. About 2 months ago, I had a week where brushing my teeth - well, one tooth in particular - was very painful. I actually stopped brushing in that area of my mouth for a week. After that week, I tried brushing again, and the pain was gone. I still went to the dentist because I have become quite paranoid about my teeth since the Milk Dud incident and he couldn't find anything wrong. I had 2 dentists in the office look at it and they both found nothing. The only explanation they had for the pain was that I probably grind my teeth while I'm sleeping and must have injured the tooth somehow. They suggested a bite splint for at night (which I am getting tonight), so we'll see how that helps things. I wish you good luck, but pain is not a good indicator when it comes to damage to your teeth. Go in, get checked out - if for not other reason than your peace of mind!

Erin, I wear a night guard while sleeping due to grinding my teeth in my sleep, and I was w/o it for about two weeks on account of leaving it in Tulsa (I
packed the black case I store it in, left the guard on the bathroom counter! Mom had to pack it and mail it to me) -- maybe that plus the stress (good stress,
but still stress) of the move and whatnot? Ahhnyway, thank the Lord (and I mean that sincerely, not flippantly) for dental insurance!!

A few yrs ago, I was eating homemade baked beans and CRUNCH!! I pulled out the crunch and it was half of one of my back molars!!! It already had a large
filling in it so I guess it was time to go so it went. Ended up with a Crown- I swear that crown is twice the size the tooth was!! I am thinking that they
molded it that way because I am also missing the tooth that would be in front of it

Oh no!! I'm sorry it turned out to be so bad! But I'm so glad to hear that you got it looked at so quickly - maybe it saved you from further pain by
not puting it off.

Apparently doing it quickly saved me an ER visit... if I'd let it go even another day w/o cleaning out the yuck I'd have been in the ER with a raging
fever screaming blue murder in pain.
