I use DMC's Stitchbow System and love it.

I store all my extra floss (after entering inventory on an excell spreadsheet) and I use this handy silverware drawer caddy for my current stitching projects.
It's hard to tell but it also expands one more row to the right. I stitch in a big overstuffed chair with big ottoman so this sits on the ottoman; my
trash goes into the big bin in the front and still plenty of room for scissors, pencils, etc. This picture was taken when I first loaded it up - I've
since filled the left side with silks for a special project and expanded it to the right for another row of DMC. You would be surprised to know it holds
(currently a row of silks and 182 bobbins of DMC) - you have projects that call for 70/80 colors but never the same colors. Now I can pick up a project and
all the floss is right at hand.

I would love to use something like your drawer Wanda, it looks pretty (my husband complains about my stitch being left out on the coffee table) but my
cat--Princess Bella likes to "steal" the bobbins when I'm not looking.

Deb, the container that Wanda is using you can probably pick up at BBB (Bed, Bath & Beyond - especially if you have a coupon of some sort) or Lowe's,
Home Depot, etc. And as far as a lid goes you could probably get a thin piece of wood and with a couple of small hinges you've got one! Then if you want to
get real creative, you could cover it with a fabric and run a small think strip of wood around the edging so you've made yourself a place to put beads when
you need to bead. Of course, that may not be the best thing, especially if you need to get back inside the box......... But thinking about it now you could!
The drawer that Wanda uses expands out. Get a small piece of wood to fit it when it is closed up and attach a couple of small hinges. Then expand it and get a
piece of wood to cover it when it is expanded, and once again use small hinges again. The only thing to think about is checking to make sure that the hinges
for the larger piece of wood (most top one) would be deep enough to screw into the drawer. Now, I just keep wondering what dh would say if I start using them
but start taking up the cabinet space with them!

Your right Terry, I purchased this one at Sams Club a few years ago but I've seen them at Linens & Things and BBB too. They run around $15 -$20; pretty
cheap IMO. Deb, I throw a towel over mine when I'm not stitching cause our new puppy doesn't have all her manners down like our 'older' dogs.

I absolutely swear by my system. It works with skeins, it works with bobbins. I went through three different systems before I discovered this one (which,
incidentally, works well even if you are a dedicated bobbin-gal).
I started with bobbins, but began to hate them because if I wanted to add a lot more bobbins, I had to move everything up so that they could all fit and be in order. Additionally, I didn't like the kinks in the yarn after I unwound it. Plus, I'm lazy. Then I tried small ziplock bags, but that was a mess. Finally, I bought three screw/nail organizers from Home Depot. These are the kinds with the small drawers. The drawers are roughly the length of a skein of thread. http://www.ranchbots.com/new_lair/files/lab_main_Bench_lg.jpg (not mine, but a visual example). Like the man did in the photo, I used my P-Touch labler, and I labeled each drawer with three different DMC numbers, in order. This took the most time, but now, all of them are in order. They fit both skeins and bobbins, and I have a mixture of each (from when I used my bobbin method). If I add several skeins it doesn't force me to reorganize everything, and they're SO easy to find! As with every system, the setup time is the largest investment, but for me, it was worth it, and I've never been happier. Anyone else use this system? I swear I stole this idea from someone else.

To me there is a big difference between floss storage and floss in use.
For storage I have 1. what I consider my Master Set - my Thread Beds. This is where I keep one skein of every colour so I know I always have a full skein handy. 2. The excess 'full skeins' I have purchased when there was a really too good to be true sale. These are in one of those nuts & bolts drawer cabinets, each drawer labeled with the floss numbers. 3. Pretty boxes with floss bags that hold partial skeins left over from finished projects. When I'm going to start a project I kit it up. I start first with the partial skeins. I pull these from the boxes. Then I go to the drawer cabinet and pull full skeins. If I'm still missing any floss for this project, I pull it from my Thread Beds. The numbers I pull from the thread beds get put on a shopping list because I know now I don't have a full skein of that colour anymore. Each of my WIPS has a complete set of the floss needed. As I finish a project, the extras go into the photo boxes, in numerical order. Haze ~ The WIP Slayer.

I use those plastic cabinets too. I keep my inventory in there minus the WIP floss. Since there can be problems with dye-lots I like to keep working off the
same skein for each WIP. I have 4 of those cabinets and I don't have every single color in there. There were some gaps when I first got the cabinets so
some of the floss is out of place (in the neighboring bin). I should get 2 more and finish organizing the floss.
My WIPs floss is on Floss Away rings. Peacock Tapestry has 2 rings - one for cotton floss, one for silks. I keep adding more bags and writing symbol of the blend on those for TWs as I go. These cubbies will work well for beads too. Not the tiny Mill Hill/Delicas, but for gemstone jewelery. I must find more of those.

I used to wind everything on bobbins but when I started BAPS I realized how much precious stitching time I was wasting winding those suckers! So I quit! I do
still have 3 of those plastic bobbin boxes (not quite) full. I then tried the DMC StitchBows system and I wasn't totally crazy about it so I gave alot of
it away. I'm still transitioning some of my floss out of the StitchBows but I have been using floss away bags and love those!! I have 4 photo boxes with my
extra bags and when I pull floss for a project I first look in the plastic bobbin cases, then the StitchBows, then the photo boxes...if it's not there I
buy new floss and EVERYTHING goes into a floss away bag and stays there till it's gone.
I put all floss, including metallics, in floss away bags...I love it, it works for me! I like this place and could willingly waste my time in it~As You Like It~W. Shakespeare~ |

I've always been a plastic box and DMC bobbin person. Although I've tried the stitchbow system once with my Christmas Mystery 2003 sampler by Pam
Kellogg.

As many here I too have done it all I think. Kitted projects I put on bobbins and place them in project boxes like the ones you see on the left in this
picture.
I keep a master set on bobbins in the container that you see all the way to the right in this picture.
I keep my "stock" of dmc in the drawers that many other people mentioned. Each drawer holds only one color and I have labeled each drawer with the number using my P-Touch. This I keep down in my basement. Fortunately I have a very dry basement.
