Need ideas for rocking horses |
Lead | ||

I was toying with the idea of doing the six rocking horses TW has on PatternsOnline and arranging them vertically. Anyone have any ideas for what border I
could use? I could also do them in two columns and three rows since there are three facing right and three facing left. Hm, not sure.

So I recalled that somewhere in my collection of old JCS magazines, as there was a point in time when I was collecting TW magazine charts if I could find them
cheaply there was an insert where it looked like the Rocking Horses had borders. After having some fun pawing through my magazine stash I finally found it in
the December 1993 issue. Unfortunately the picture is really small and you can't see the detail enough to try to design your own border. These were an
"art print" promotion they were doing way back then. So sadly this wasn't as good an idea as I originally thought.
You could do something simple like the border from stretch. Or if you want something thicker Dragon Ride. Then if you want to go all out there's Guardian. Or you could go through TWs bookmarks figure out how to make them turn a corner and expand from there. Think is I think some of the more floral horses wouldn't go as well with a knotwork border as others. Plus it would be hard to pick something that would be cohesive with the different horse colorings. Gold works well for diamond, but not so well with trotter for example. Perhaps you could do something that isn't the same border throughout but just bars that go between 2 horses, then it doesn't have to be the same everywhere. I love the rocking horses and I've stitched 3 of them to date. Someday I may stitch more, but then there's so much I want to stitch.

I do like the border from Stretch. Trotter has some yellow, so a gold border might not be so bad. I'll have to play with it in Photoshop.

I did my six as seasonal pillows.
I succumbed, they're just so cute...

I stitched these for my mom and she put them together in a wall hanging. No border, but at least you can get an idea of what it looks like with the 2 rows.

Someone designed a border for carousel, maybe that one would work? You could adapt the green to golds/yellows or something if that would fit better. Or you
could see if you can do anything with the border from English cottage sampler? The border of Treetop Sampler is already a bellpull. Angel procession has a
rather neutral border that would go with anything, especially if you adapt the colours. The last two of the Legend patterns have a neutral border too, as does
the Minstrel.
I have to agree with the poster(s) above me that have doubts about the Celtic knots. How much I love those borders, I somehow don't see them with rocking horses. I think your best bet is an afternoon spent with Photoshop, some heavy cutting and pasting and a good look at the DMC colours that are used in the rocking horses and the borders. |

I wondered about the border of fruit/floral bellpulls? Can't recall the colours off hand (other than green), or how they'd got with the horses, but
they aren't too thick so I don't thnk they'd swamp the horses (if that makes sense?). And I defy you to think of a TW without some green in it. You
could substitute the satin stitch bits for a colour that goes well with the horses.
Amy - the wall hangign is lovely!

Footprints, Celtic Crosses, and some of the bookmarks don't have green.
