Vickie - The butterfly has a wire frame that you bend into shape. You stitch ribbon onto it and then attach them to the fabric. It was lots of fun to do  As
for ribbonwork... short length, slightly larger needle and steady tension helps. The main trick is to find the right tension - pull too hard and the shape
collapses. But the nice thing about it (the ribbonwork) is that it's very forgiving. "Imperfection" blends in with the rest and nobody else
notices :
