Is anyone else working on an afghan? I know there used to be a thread here for afghans, but I can't seem to find it.

I started my afghan in either 1990 or 1989, I'm not sure!
It was originally Sue Hillis' Granny's Attic Afghan, but instead of stitching the same square twice I instead added designs from Sam Hawkins' 501 Crosstitch Designs book. I changed the colors on his designs to coordinate with the Sue Hillis designs.

This summer we were traveling in Minnesota and much to my surprise Sue Hillis' Granny's Attic afghan was displayed in the wonderful LNS Stitchville, USA.

If you click on the link you'll see my afghan, and the following photos in the album are of each individual square. I'm over halfway done now.

Is anyone else working on an afghan?

I have two afghans in the works right now Sue! One is Dragon Feathers by Fanta Cat, and it's about half (?) done...

The other is one I'm doing for my mom...the designs were freebies on the Vermillion website a few years back. They are flower bears for each month, and so far I have the first four done....

I find it hard to work on them in the summer, but they are in my rotation and I plan on working on both again this year!

I'm working (at a snail's pace) on the Rainforest Afghan. I'm contemplating frogging some of it as it does seem a shame to wimp out of using blending filament on the rainbow. However, I really, really hate BF. Oh well, I won't be working on it again until Winter....

I don't mind the BF, but I use one strand of floss less for the rainbow, or else it would be totally 'stiffened' by the time I have it finished. I hate BF, but it does look good...

well, I started it a couple YEARS ago.... I did 3 squares and then had to frog all of it. Then I restarted it - and lost my stitching groove on it.... I had less than half a square done. I hadn't touched it in nearly 2 years. I pulled it out a while ago and worked on it for a couple weeks and have now not touched it in quite a few weeks......... I feel bad about it... But I'm pretty sure that the reason I haven't worked on it more is because I'm not sure what I'm going to do with it when I've finished it. I wanted to have it as a functional blanket, but my cat has this think for "plucking" blankets. And I'd have to kill him if he plucked dragon feathers! so, either I stitch it and put it up until my cat is no longer here.... or I stitch it and give it to a relative... or it becomes a UFO that it is..... None of those options are really inspiring.......... And the sad thing is that I would LOVE to stitch the Regal Peadragon afghan as well, but what's the point??? :rolleyes

Oh, Vanessa, I feel your pain! I haven't worked on my Dragon Feathers afghan in many moons either, and also cause I didn't know what I was going to do with it....*and* I have FOUR cats!
I finally had an inspiration....hang the afghan on the wall! I have an art quilt hanging in my living room, and walking through one day, it hit me that I could hang the dragon up there too! I use upholstery pins (they are sharp and long) on the quilt, and I think I can do the same with Mr. Dragon, just use more. Stairwells also work great for large things if you don't have another available wall.

The teddy bear afghan I'm making for my mom should be safe....she doesn't have any cats! :lol

I actually have five cats... But only one plucks it.... I'm already reaching end of wall space already, so hanging it up isn't really an option for me either......... But it's nice to know I've got company!

I have nine, soon to be ten cats. And only two who pluck blankets - but two is enough.
Since I'm working on Rainforest Afghan and I'm currently on square three, I'm not too worried about what to do when I'm *done*, though... LOL!

I am working on JAS's Dragon Virtues Afghan. My lay out is different than her suggested layout. In my layout I have 28 squares that need stitching; 14 dragons, 2 moons, 2 suns, and 10 stars. I just finished my fourth dragon last night and I also have 3 stars, a moon, and a sun done. I know what I am doing with mine. I will finish it with polar fleece on the back and bind it with blanket binding. I will then give it to my DD as a college graduation present. Now all I have to do is finish it by May. It will be tight but I am certainly goin to try.

Update: As of the end of January I have finished my fifth dragon, Strength and another star for a total of 11 of the 30 blocks done. above I mentioned 28 blocks but I am also using the two center blocks for a non JAS design call " Our Children are our Greatest Treasure". I am now a little over a third of the way done. I will be back next month with another update.

ok, be careful with the polar fleece thing... Polar fleece is a really stretchy fabric. It may stretch to be LARGER than the front. I've had this happen with a store bought blanket of mine. It had polar fleece on the back and fake fur on the front. The back has now stretched and I can't get it to lay completely flat now.... Just a word of caution... I know this suggestion is going to be expensive, but the best thing to back an afghan with the same material as the front. That way it shrinks & such at the same rate... Just a thought...

Vanessa, Thanks for the info. I never even considered that the polar fleece might stretch. I will have to keep a look out for more of the same afghan materia. Part of the reason I was thinking of using polar fleece was to make the afghan more substancial. What finishing techniques have any of you used?

Actually, I'm getting closer to finishing (as in stitching) my Vermillion teddy afghan...bear #7 is done...5 more to go!

I'm starting to think I might just hem this one (nun stitch that is) and not back it at all. My grandmother made me a bed-sized afghan years ago (she afghan stitched it, then cross stitched on top!) and it was not backed. No threads from the cross stitching have pulled out, despite it being sent to the cleaners. The bear afghan is probably going to spend most of it's time folded on the back of the sofa, and won't get as much wear as a bed-sized afghan.

I have the antique white Tannenbaum afghan that I havent started on yet. I cant decide whether to stitch the folder that came with it or 12 Days of Christmas that is in The Cross STitch Magazine from a month or so ago.

Though I'd add mine to the list too. I'm stitching a Cross my Heart's Animal Magnetism aghan using both books. I started this way back in 2002 and have been slowely plugging away at it. I'm a third done and I either like to get it finished or close to finished this year.
