have you tried it yet? My cousin says I'm a glutton for punishment. I found a beginners kit online. (man I thought cross stitch and quilting was
expensive!) that was a good price.

Do you have a link? Some of these kits are not worth the money. Perhaps I can advise and help you? I used to teach my sister when she didn't have a phone.
She had to go to a phone box with her pillow to get me to help her. :

I thought this was a good price for basis starting. nothing fancy and no thread, but I thought the bobbin count was pretty generous. I will order it in April for my b-day. what do you think? http://www.victoriantradingco.com/store/catalogimages/9i/i1473.html Pattilynn wips: Noahs Ark, Father Winter Ornie |

That bobbin count is the absolute minimum - you will need 6 pairs (ie 12 bobbins) to learn the basic stitches but it isn't enough to do any pattern. The
straight edge alone on any basic pattern takes 3 pairs, plus what it takes for the rest of the width (which varies according to each particular design) so if
you do order it make sure you buy at least another 12. It may sound intimidating but believe me, there's nothing more frustrating than not having enough!
(And you also need a spare single bobbin to bring in a new thread when one breaks, or runs out, or you have a knot.....) I can strongly recommend a book by
Rosemary Shepherd, which is based on a correspondence course she wrote for the Australian Lace Guild; unfortunately I can't remember the exact title but
it's the only thing she wrote so if you see the name that's the one! I know it used to be available in the States, but I'm out of touch these days.
(I taught lacemaking for 20 years and gave up after wrecking my neck making 11 yards to trim my DD's wedding veil....the marriage broke up in the first
year..........

I'm learning to make Lace but luckly enough to be given everything I needed to get started by a fellow WI member.
So far I've done a weekend course and last week attended my first class after searching for one local enough for me to make it to every week. |

Pattilynn, I'm a bobbin lace maker, and have been making lace for about 8 years. The kit you saw is quite reasonable proces, but Fiona's right, you
will need more bobbins - 12 pairs will (just about) make a thin edging, or maybe a bookmark.
I bought a secondhand Dryad starter kit (from Oxfam for £2!!) not long after I took up lace, and there was no way you could make the lace that was pictured on the box with the number of bobbins provided (about 12 I think) - but you could learn the stitches. Just last month I learnt that my new lace making friend, who I sit next to at my lace class, made the lace on the front of the box. So now I can never get rid of the kit!!! Good luck with having a go, If you have any questions I'm happy to try and give you a hand, although Maria and Fiona are far more experienced than me! Fiona - that's so sad about your daughter. I hope she kept the lace anyway.

Lindsay, which lace day did you got to? Did you get bobbins by a particular maker? I like Stuart Johnson's best, and Janet Retter does the most amazing
minature paintings - although I only have 3 of hers as they are so pricey (but not for what you get).
I LOVE going to lace days and always spend a fortune - I'm not sure if it's a good or a bad thing that I can't make the Harrogate show a week on Sunday!!

I've been making bobbin lace for about 7 years now. The kit that you show in your link is commonly known as the "kit from h***" by many lacers on
the internet. It is not recommended. I believe the "stand" is nothing more than a couple pieces of cardboard and the "board" is a hunk of
styrofoam. It will not be useful for very long. Most lacers who bought this kit quickly replaced it with better supplies. So the cost may not be much, but you
are pretty much throwing that money away.
I see in your profile that you are in the US. I highly recommend a kit from Snowgoose Lace http://www.snowgoose.cc . It includes a cloth covered Ethafoam pillow and all you need to start a project. It is a little more expensive, but is *much* better quality! I still use mine! I do recommend getting the larger size pillow 18" or 20". 16" is okay for beginning, but eventually it seems a little small. I also second Fiona's recommendation for Rosemary Shepherd's book "Introduction to Bobbin Lacemaking". Her diagrams are EXCELLENT! While it is quite possible to learn bobbin lace on your own from a book, it is so much easier if there is someone to help you get started. Even a couple of hours will go a long way. There are a couple of lace guilds in Oregon. The national lace organization IOLI has a website http://www.internationaloldlacers.org/chapters.html which lists the chapters. There is a link to the Portland Lace Society. Also.... IIRC, the national convention will be hosted in Portland in 2010! BTW, my other favorite lace supplier is Lacy Susan (Wenzel) at http://www.laceysusan.com She has a large selection of books, bobbins, and lace supplies. I hope some of you give bobbin lace a try!
